Biofilters, the most common type of bioreactor, typically use beds made from naturally occurring organic materials that slowly supply most of the macro-nutrients needed to sustain the biomass. 

The products of bio-reaction consuming hydrocarbons are water and CO2, which are not harmful to the environment.
